Todmorden's a border town. The Pennines above the town divide Yorkshire's River Calder from its more modest namesake, Lancashire's Calder.
There's an obvious destination for walkers in Stoodley Pike, the prominent obelisk first erected on the hills above the town in 1814. Intrepid visitors can clamber up to the viewing platform (be prepared to grope your way in the pitch black). The Pennine Way will bring you here whilst, close at hand, are several other long-distance trails including the Calderdale Way and the Todmorden Centenary Walk which encircles Todmorden.
Moorland packhorse trails will take you to other fascinating landmarks, including mediaeval Mount Cross and the rocky outcrop known as the Bride Stones. More gentle options include strolling the Rochdale canal towpath or discovering the woods above Centre Vale Park.
