GRADING.

Grading routes
We have developed a simple grading system to help assess the difficulty of each route. The grades vary slightly for each user type, walker, horse rider or cyclist, but all follow the same approach.

Grade Description
Easy
Surfaces will mostly be firm. There may be some gentle slopes.
Moderate
There may be some steeper slopes, or longer sections of ascent or descent. Paths may have rough, un-surfaced sections.
Challenging
Routes may include sections without marked paths, prolonged steep sections, or long flights of steps. Terrain may be rough or exposed.

We know grading can be very subjective - what is easy for one person may well be very difficult for another. We have tried to develop a system based on the surface, terrain and gradient. If a route is mostly level and mostly on surfaced paths it counts as 'easy'; if the surface is rough in places, and there are steep sections it will be 'moderate'; if it is across open moorland, with rough paths or steep ascents it is challenging but we believe worth the effort. The length of the route does not affect the grade.
