South Pennines Walk & Ride Festival September 10th - 25th 2011
This year's South Pennine Walk and Ride Festival has launched in Marsden on 10th and 11th September, courtesy of Marsden Walkers are Welcome What a great weekend!! A fantastic story telling walk from Marsden to Tunnel end in the company of storyteller Peter Findlay enchanted the children and adults alike. And the Boat Lane Walk on the Sunday, when narrow boat Elland was legged through the tunnel while we followed the horse over the top was well attended. I never realised how dirty a job legging was but when the boat emerged in Diggle all the leggers and the boat were covered in grime! Much better to walk in the fresh air over Pule Hill.
On the same day in Hebden Bridge, the inaugural Up The Buttress event was taking place. AWESOME is the only word to describe the effort put in by cyclists as they competed to be the fastest in their class up this incredibly steep route out of Hebden Bridge. A huge crowd lined the route and shouted encouragement as riders slid on the cobbles as they tackled the hill. Thanks to competitors, organisers and sponsors alike.
The Walk and Ride Festival continues until 25th September – have a look at the other events, there’s a walk, cycle ride or horse ride for everyone and most of them are free of charge. There are walks and rides in Todmorden and Wycoller, Saddleworth and Ilkley, Haworth and Holmfirth. More cycling events than ever are being held this year - why not join in the Bronte Big K mountain bike challenge or take the opportunity to follow Claire Baldings' route over the Pennine watershed on a guided bike ride. And Calderdale is entering into the spirit by putting on its own cycling festival events which are all listed in our programme. So visit . . .

Our theme for this year’s festival is locally produced food and drink, so there will be an emphasis on events that involve local producers in some way – a walk with added cake, a cycle ride that ends at a local brewery, a horse ride with a barbeque lunch for the riders (no, we’re not going to eat the horses!!!!)
There will also be more events for children and young people, for them to try new activities such as mountain biking and horse riding, all in the fantastic setting of the South Pennines.
The South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival has helped to establish the South Pennines as an absolute gem that can match many better known areas when it comes to stunning scenery and outdoor activity. Moreover, our excellent public transport means that many people can enjoy the countryside but are able to leave their car at home. If you are interested in exploring this area outside of the Festival Fortnight go to the Walk, Cycle and Ride Routes link on the Home page to find walking, cycling and horse-riding routes for all abilities.
