Todmorden's a border town. The Pennines above the town divide Yorkshire's River Calder from its more modest namesake, Lancashire's Calder.
Come here for invigorating cycling, high up on moorland bridleways where packhorses once tramped. The town is a great base for the Pennine Bridleway's Mary Towneley Loop, a challenging 47-mile circuit of the west Pennine moors.
Helpfully, Todmorden's local Metro Connect buses (T1-T6, T8, T9) are equipped with cycle racks - useful if you want to avoid the initial climb out of the valley to the moorlands above.
