The little moorside settlements which together make up the township of Saddleworth are famous for the brass band festivals which take place here every Whit Friday, when daily life stops and everyone takes to the streets to enjoy the music.
The Peak District national park is close at hand, just to the east. For cyclists, the main route of the Pennine Bridleway links the Saddleworth villages, following the valley of the River Tame and the Huddersfield Narrow canal. Other bridleways and by-roads offer the chance to explore Harrop Edge hill, or to take in some history at the Castle Shaw roman fort.
